Bihar records 49.1 petabytes of daily internet data consumption as smartphone use, 4G and 5G adoption reshape digital habits
India’s internet consumption is rapidly moving beyond calls, messaging and basic browsing. Smartphones and connected devices are now central to video streaming, social media, online searches, gaming, digital payments and a growing range of digital services.
Against this backdrop, Bihar has emerged as one of India’s biggest markets for mobile internet consumption. According to available telecom data, the state records around 49.1 petabytes (PB) of daily internet data consumption, ahead of Maharashtra and eastern Uttar Pradesh. The figures highlight how rapidly mobile internet has expanded beyond India’s major metropolitan centres.
Bihar Records 49.1 Petabytes of Daily Data Consumption
Bihar consumes approximately 49.1 petabytes of internet data every day, equivalent to about 49.1 million gigabytes (GB) on a decimal basis.
Maharashtra follows with 48.7 PB, while eastern Uttar Pradesh records around 42.31 PB of daily consumption. The numbers underline the scale of mobile internet use across states and regions that have traditionally had lower levels of digital connectivity.
Bihar still has considerable room for further growth. A CRISIL assessment of India’s telecom industry recorded the state’s tele-density at 55.2% in FY2023, compared with 84.5% nationally. The relatively lower tele-density suggests that internet usage could expand further as smartphone ownership and network availability increase.
YouTube Is the Biggest Data Consumer
Video has become a major driver of internet traffic. According to the available figures, YouTube accounts for 24.3% of total data consumption, making it the largest individual platform in the dataset.
YouTube’s combination of long-form videos, Shorts, live streams and high-definition content encourages users to spend extended periods consuming video. Higher-resolution streaming also requires significantly more data than text-based browsing.
The platform’s enormous reach in India reflects the broader shift towards video-led internet consumption. Users increasingly rely on online video not only for entertainment but also for news, education, tutorials, music and information.
Instagram Adds to the Video-First Shift
Instagram accounts for 21.7% of data consumption, according to the available figures. Reels, Stories, live videos and image-heavy feeds make the platform another significant source of internet traffic.
The combined share of YouTube and Instagram stands at 46%. Together, the two platforms illustrate the extent to which India’s internet habits have moved towards video and visual content.
The change is significant because video consumption typically requires far more data than traditional text-based activities such as reading articles or sending messages.
Facebook and Google Remain Major Sources of Usage
Facebook accounts for 17.5% of data consumption in the available figures. Google also contributes substantially through searches, websites and other online services.
Social platforms have evolved well beyond their original role as communication tools. Users now rely on them for news, entertainment, shopping, advertising, education and access to digital services. A single session can therefore involve multiple forms of data-intensive activity.
5G Is Accelerating High-Speed Data Use
The expansion of 5G networks is adding another dimension to India’s data-consumption growth. A 2025 report based on TRAI data indicated that overall data usage increased by 4.3% in a quarter, while 5G data consumption rose 18.1%. During the period, 5G accounted for nearly 30% of total data usage.
Faster networks make high-resolution video, live streaming, cloud services and other data-intensive applications easier to access. As 5G coverage expands, users may consume more data because content can be accessed faster and at higher quality.
Video Streaming Remains the Biggest Driver
Across the digital ecosystem, video remains one of the largest sources of data consumption. YouTube and social-media videos are joined by OTT platforms, live streams, gaming and other high-bandwidth services.
Data usage also comes from downloading large files, uploading photographs and videos, automatic app updates, online gaming and other connected services. As smartphones become more capable and networks become faster, these activities are becoming increasingly routine.
Data Consumption Reflects India’s Digital Expansion
The high levels of internet consumption recorded in Bihar, Maharashtra and eastern Uttar Pradesh point to a broader transformation in India’s digital landscape.
Affordable data plans, wider smartphone access and expanding 4G and 5G networks have brought mobile internet deeper into smaller cities and rural communities. At the same time, the rapid growth of video and social-media platforms has changed what people do online and how much data they consume.
Bihar’s position is particularly notable because the state still has significant scope for further connectivity growth. As more people gain access to smartphones and high-speed networks, internet consumption is likely to expand further.
India’s data story is therefore no longer confined to its largest cities. The growing demand for video, social media and digital services shows that the country’s digital transformation is increasingly being driven by users across regions, communities and income groups.
